This week's question is: Do you have multiple copies of any of your books?
If so, why? Absent-mindedness? You love them that much? First Editions for the shelf, but paperbacks to read? If not, why not? Not enough space? Not enough money? Too sensible to do something so foolish?
My answer: Yes! The Anne of Green Gables series, and the first book in particular. I own three sets of the books. One to keep, one to loan out and several editions of Anne of Green Gables (including a first edition!). I kept loaning my books out only to have the borrower lose them or forget to return them. So I finally just bought a seperate set. I don't mind loaning out books but I'm dissuaded from doing so when my books are not returned.
Also! We have multiple copies of a few Wodehouse titles because my husband owned some of the same ones that I did. Another benefit to marriage: an expanded book collection!
Hence, I do not find the idea of owning several copies of one's favorite book foolish at all!

I just don't loan books anymore -- have found that few people treat them with proper consideration...

No I don't find owning several copies odd either!

It's gotten to the point where I only loan books to people I trust to return them or loan out books I do not care if they are returned or not. I've been known to buy a copy of a book for someone because they want to borrow mine so much. :-)

I write to you in contemplation of my shelves, gently leaning forward under the weight of books, even without the doubles, hidden in the basement.

I have alot of CS Lewis doubles; Surprised by Joy, Chronicles..
I also have double Barbara Michaels.
Most of my doubles are because I had the paperback to read and then found a hardback for a ragamuffin price. I usually don't mind paperback unless I read it often enough that it starts to fall apart.
Or in my case of Emilie Lorings they are 60 year old paperbacks AND well read.
I have books because I love them and cannot part with them. I loan my books to Knockable doors; that is, one's I can hunt down and get my book back.
Otherwise I just buy them their own copy.
If I had the money I would TOTALLY own more than one copy of several books so that I could loan them out without worrying about them being damaged or lost. When one of the doctors in my clinic moved we turned his office into a library (and named it a Memorial Library after him). We have duplicate copies of some office favorites and I wish I had duplicates of some of MY favorites so I would feel better about bringing them in, knowing I have a spare at home. I have to agree with you - not foolish at all. :o)
