Saturday Review of Highlights (for me)

Sherry at Semicolon nicely hosts the Saturday Review of Books and I'm here merely to highlight some of MY favorite reviews of the week.

I just have a few highlights this week. (It's Thanksgiving weekend and fewer people are around to link up to Semicolon, I guess. That, or they had less time to read this week? That's believable. Still, despite fewer links to browse, there is always something good to find. A few weeks back I mentioned a new book blog that I discovered at Semicolon called Bookie Woogie which is run by a dad and his three kids. They review their favorite books by conversation (which dad tape records and then types the relevant portions up for later). Each review is also illustrated by the kids. You gotta go check out their review of Holes and take special note of Isaac's yellow spotted lizard. I still think this book review blog is a great idea and subscribed to their feed to stay in their loop. It's fun!

Secondly, I don't know if you've had the opportunity yet to read the adventures of Mary and Sherlock Holmes brought to you by Laurie King, but if not, I highly recommend it. My friend, Sky, originally tipped me off to this new mystery/adventure series and I absolutely loved the first book of the series, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Carrie at Bookes and Movies has been reading through the rest of the series for which I am thankful. I'm thankful because I feared that the follow-up books in the series wouldn't be as good as the first but Carrie assures otherwise. Her review of book two, A Monstrous Regiment of Women can be found here. Her review ofA Letter of Mary (the third book) can be found here. I look forward to diving in on the rest of the series sooner, rather than later. But I still have to read the other book I promised to read of Sky's -- Comstock Lode, by Louis Lamour. (Sky likes a wide variety of genres. This is good for me.)

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and are enjoying a restful holiday weekend!

I love Laurie King's Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes books. You might also want to try King's Art of Detection, where SFPD detective Kate Martinelli gets involved in a mystery involving an unpublished Holmes manuscript - very enjoyable!

Thanks for the links! I'm planning to try the Kate Martinelli series after I finish the Mary Russell novels.

I have never read a book by Laurie R. King, but I've heard her highly recommended by lots of people. I'll definitely have to give her a try.

I absolutely love the Russell books and can't wait until next April when the nineth book "The Language of Bees" is published.
