Kid Picks

Time for another Kid Pick carnival over at 5 Minutes for Books. This month we've been having a little fun with I Spy A Candy Cane. I wasn't sure how my two year old son would do with the I Spy books but he really seems to enjoy them. I show him the picture we're looking for and he takes the time to find the items hidden on each page. I'm kinda amazed actually and really want to pick up I Spy Little Letters soon as I think that would be a good way to force him to pick out and recognize letters. (He recognizes that he's looking AT letters but he can't really tell you which ones yet.)

This being his first year to really pay attention to anything Christmas, it was fun to have the I Spy A Candy Cane book to point out objects which are now well-familiar to us. I'm starting to put some thought into the educational value of the I Spy books, I have to say. They seem to be a great way to have a child really pay attention to any given item as they learn to recognize things that exist in the world around them. I might have a bit more to say about these books later but for now we're just enjoying them for a good game, more or less.

The other nice thing about these books are that you can find them in paperback version for around $4. So far, every time I've pulled out our Christmas I Spy Book, he's been excited and interested to find the hidden Christmas objects so I look forward to exploring the themes in the rest of the I Spy series.

We checked a few of those out from the library, and Kyle likes them.

Do you have any of the board books? They are simpler (obviously), but they had big staying power in our house. I could actually send them to you if you want.

Ooooohhh, thanks so much for sharing. I, for some reason, always thought that mine would be too little to get anything out of these. I hate when I assume and I'm glad to have found this great community. I'll be on the look out at the library. Thanks again!

That's really cool - I didn't think my 2 year old would be ready for these but now I think I might give one a try! Great review!
