So, let's postpone the discussion until NEXT Friday, November 2nd, to give everyone a bit more time to finish and write their thoughts up. I think this one will prove an interesting discussion and I hate to rush myself through it - let alone others.
In other news, some of you may be confused as to why you sometimes see the word verification turned ON in my posts in the comment section. I explained in the comment section earlier today but let me say it here as well:
I get TONS of spam.
And no, the spam does not post on the blog - that is not my concern. The problem is in that I receive e-mail notifications for all comments - spam and otherwise - and so my inbox can fill up with up to 50 spam notifications at a time. I just get tired of dealing with them. So, when life is busy and I don't have time to sort through e-mails to find out who wrote a real comment then I'll turn it ON. I will always try to remember to turn it OFF when I am able.
I prefer to keep word verification OFF (because I hate trying to work around it just as much as you do). But when life gets busy, it goes ON so as not to make my inbox a chaotic place. If you notice it on for an extended period of time and it's bugging you, please e-mail me (or work real hard to leave a comment -ha!) asking me to turn it off again and I'll do it right quick. I'm not trying to annoy anyone and I am perfectly fine with you reminding me to turn it off! (Sometimes I have forgotten!)
What I would LOVE is if Blogger would allow me to turn it on for "posts older than 3 days." That would solve a great many of my problems.

I suppose spam is proof that someone knows about your blog ;)
I wouldn't mind verification if it wasn't so eager to decide that I am a robot. Why does Google's blog engine have tougher screening images than all the other verifications that Google does? Ah, the mysteries of life...
I will call this a first-world problem, and move on to worry about the important things like whether Windows 8 will require me to re-learn how to do everything.
Just to clarify, I wasn't complaining that you're doing word verification. :) I just couldn't get it to work!
Oh, I didn't think you were complaining at all!!! No one who has mentioned the word verification issue has come across as complaining one little bit. I just wanted to clarify why you see it sometimes and why you don't because I know the issue CAN be a little annoying sometimes....when you are working so hard to leave a comment. :D (And I thank you for that!)
Like DOAA above, I don't mind that they have it (too much), just that Blogger makes it so difficult. Since they've started using numbers as well as letters, sometimes the numbers are blurry and I have to make my best guess. Other blogging companies seem to have found easier ways to solve the problem, and I wish Blogger would pursue those. Your suggestion is a great one -- you should send it in to them. :-)
I understand having to deal with it, though -- I get anywhere from 25-125 spam comments on any given day. WordPress uses a system that filters out spam comments. I do have to skim through that to make sure it hasn't caught any genuine ones, but it also "learns" from that somehow and now rarely marks a legit comment as spam.
I agree. I would be nice to put the word verification on old posts. I just turned off comment moderation on old posts because I was sick of spam filling my inbox and I didn't want to turn on word verification. I will say Blogger's spam catcher does a great job of catching the stuff. Just wish we had a few more options with it.
Carrie,
I've had a couple people recently tell me they've had trouble publishing comments on my blog. I decided to turn off word ver. Well, 24 hours later, I'd received quite a few spam messages, so back it went. Boo!
Those weird address numbers they use now are so hard to read!
I don't mind word verification if I can figure out what the heck they say!
But Uncle Tom's Cabin--what an amazing book. Looking forward to your thoughts on it. :)
five minutes later....
oh irony of ironies...I cannot get this verification to work.....
Bless your heart! I am trying very hard to get done with Uncle Tom's Cabin, on page 225...I will more than likely NOT even be done by the 2nd. But I will be able to discuss most of it. Sorry. Life gets in the way some times.
